Egg Production: 200 – 250/yr large green eggs

Temperament: Docile/Active

OTHER: Created in 1980 this breed was a project that ended unfinished as Mr. Silverudd died before its completion. It is known he used Rhode Island Red and New Hampshires but any further breeds are not fully known. The import of Cream Legbars many years earlier were likely used to add the blue egg genes to make the green eggs they lay today. The “Blue” in Silverudd’s Blue refers to their feather coloring not their actual egg colors. The blue feathering counts this breed as a BBS variety (Blue, Black, Splash) giving a little diversity in the offspring depending how they are paired together.

Because this project was unfinished there is a large variation in size and body shape. On the Edmonds Eggs farm we have two unrelated genetic lines and plan on breeding for a larger more dual purpose friendly size as part of our Silverudd’s Blue breeding plans. All of our breeders are homozygous tested for the blue egg gene so the chicks can be used for fun color projects, or breeding forward. The breed are known to be excellent layers but the average eggs per year can range from 200 to 300 depending on the source. The colors can vary from lighter to slightly darker green with varying amounts of speckles depending on the breeder and what they chose in their breeding strategy. In summary this chicken is not a boring cookie cutter breed, though there is a standard of perfection, there is still enough variability to make them a fun addition to the backyard. Their personality is fantastic too, these chickens aren’t just a pretty face! They are highly active making them excellent foragers. Being cooped up in a pen is not where this breed thrives. They are brave, vigilant, agile, curious and just an absolute joy to have. Our roosters are very respectful of human space and have been very friendly.
